5 Signs it's Time to Replace Your Windows

Updated: May 14

As a homeowner, it’s important to keep up with the maintenance of your house. Depending on the age of your home, this maintenance could be as simple as changing out air filters or as complex as re-plumbing the entire house. One area that homeowners often neglect is their windows.

Your windows are an essential part of your house for several reasons. Windows protect your home from the elements and insects; they also play a significant role in your home’s energy efficiency which directly relates to your monthly heating and cooling costs. When it’s time to replace your windows, it’s important to do so with quality products that will stand the test of time — like FAS windows and doors. Is It Time to Upgrade Your Home's Windows?

How to Know it is Time for Window Replacement

If you’re unsure whether it’s time to replace your windows, here are five signs that indicate it might be time to upgrade your old windows to FAS replacement windows:

1. Your Energy Bills are Increasing

One of the most common indicators that it’s time to replace your windows is an increase in energy bills. If you notice that you’re spending more money on cooling and heating your home than you have in previous years, faulty windows or drafty windows could be to blame. Replacing old, inefficient windows with new ENERGY STAR® certified windows can help reduce utility bills by up to 15%.

If you have recently updated your home’s HVAC system and you still notice you have high energy costs, it probably is also time to consider window replacement.

2. You Hear Outside Noise

Do you find yourself constantly having to turn up the volume on the television or radio because of outside noise? Or maybe you have a hard time hearing loved ones when they’re trying to talk to you from another room in the house. If you answered yes to either of these questions, poorly insulated windows might be the culprit. Newer windows are designed with better insulation materials that can help reduce unwanted noise from entering your home.

3. Your Windows are Difficult to Open and Close

Another telltale sign that it might be time for new windows is if they’re difficult (or even impossible) to open and close properly. This is usually due to paint or caulking around the window becoming dried out and cracked over time—allowing air and water leaks. Not being able to open or close your windows can also pose a safety hazard since you won’t be able to ventilate your home when appropriately needed.

4. There is Condensation or Frost Buildup Between Panes

Even though we live in Florida and only see frost during the rare winter cold fronts, it is still a possibility. When appropriately sealed, double-paned glass should not have any condensation or frost buildup between panes—regardless of how cold it is outside. If you notice condensation or frost on your windows, this usually indicates the seal has failed and needs to be replaced immediately. Allowing moisture inside sealed glass panes can cause permanent damage and drastically shorten the lifespan of your window panes.

5. Your Home's Floors and Furniture are Fading

If you have hardwood floors, carpeting, or furniture near your windows—and you notice those items are starting to fade—it means too much UV light is coming into your home through old glass panes. While most newer window models come with built-in UV protection, many older models do not—which makes them much more susceptible to damage from harmful sun rays. In some cases, simply adding a UV film to existing glass panes can help mitigate fading; however, if the damage is already done, it might be time for new windows altogether.
